The Netherlands has unveiled a €1.2 billion aid package dedicated to supporting Ukraine over the coming three years, coinciding with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to The Hague. This non-military assistance aims to bolster Ukraine as it continues to face challenges from the ongoing conflict with Russia.
During his visit, President Zelenskyy is expected to engage in discussions with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and other key officials, including Defence Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz and Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen. Additionally, he will have the opportunity to attend a reception with King Willem-Alexander.
A significant portion of the aid, amounting to €40 million, is earmarked for the restoration of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which has suffered damage from Russian military strikes. This effort is particularly timely as Ukraine prepares for the upcoming winter season. Furthermore, the package includes €55 million allocated for the procurement of essential equipment such as generators, transformers, and compressors from Dutch companies, intended to be supplied to Ukraine.
The Dutch government is also facilitating the aid package by providing €136 million for related measures and enhancing export credit insurance to mitigate financial risks for companies involved in supplying equipment to the war-affected region.
This visit by Zelenskyy follows Prime Minister Jetten’s trip to Kyiv in March, shortly after assuming office, underscoring the ongoing diplomatic and financial support from the Netherlands to Ukraine. The leaders are expected to continue discussions on sustaining international support for Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia.
Zelenskyy’s visit highlights the Netherlands’ commitment to assisting Ukraine and participating in international efforts to assess war-related damage and establish mechanisms for compensation. The aid package not only reflects the diplomatic ties between the two nations but also underscores the Netherlands’ role in supporting Ukraine’s recovery and resilience in the face of ongoing challenges.
