Sheffield Wednesday will begin a painful “reset” from the very bottom of the Championship, starting with a balance of -6 points. The EFL imposed an automatic 12-point penalty after owner Dejphon Chansiri, facing mounting financial pressure, placed the club into administration. The sanction leaves the Owls 15 points adrift of safety, making relegation almost unavoidable.
The move comes after months of severe turbulence. The club has failed to pay players and staff on time in five of the last seven months and owes an estimated $pounds{}$1 million in taxes to HMRC. Reports suggested a winding-up petition from the tax authority was imminent, forcing Chansiri’s hand.
Fans, who have been actively protesting the ownership, described the news as “one of the most bittersweet days” in their 158-year history. The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust expressed relief, stating, “We are overjoyed to have Dejphon Chansiri out of our club for good.” Seats spelling “Chansiri” in the North Stand were being removed almost immediately.
The club is now in the hands of administrator Begbies Traynor. They met with manager Henrik Pedersen and “emotional” staff, assuring them they would seek a new owner “as swiftly as possible.” The administrator will market the club and Hillsborough stadium, which is owned by a separate Chansiri company, as a single package.
Despite the bleak league position, Pedersen insisted his team would “keep fighting.” He called the administration a necessary “fresh restart” for a “fantastic club,” adding, “When I close my eyes, I can see a bright future for Sheffield Wednesday.”
