Caretaker Economic Affairs Minister Vincent Karremans said he will engage in discussions with Chinese officials to resolve the export ban on Nexperia chips, which came into effect this week following the Dutch government’s intervention in the company.
The Netherlands took control of Nexperia under a national security law, leading to the dismissal of its Chinese CEO, Zhang Xuezheng, after a court ruling in Amsterdam. In response, China imposed an export ban preventing the shipment of chips produced at Nexperia’s major manufacturing facility, which supplies around 50 billion chips annually to global car manufacturers.
Karremans stressed that the decision to intervene was made independently to protect Europe’s semiconductor supply chain and ensure chip availability for Dutch and European industries, rejecting Beijing’s claims that the move was influenced by the United States.
Automotive groups worldwide have warned that the ban could trigger a global shortage of car chips within weeks, disrupting production across multiple regions. Karremans said ongoing consultations aim to lift the restrictions as soon as possible. “This is not just about Dutch interests — restoring Nexperia’s exports is vital for global industry stability,” he said.
