Greece maintained its position at the top of its Nations League group after a 2-2 draw with the Netherlands in Thessaloniki on Thursday. The match saw Greece take a commanding lead in the first half, only for the Netherlands to rally and equalize late in the game.
Fotis Ioannidis opened the scoring for Greece in the 23rd minute, capitalizing on a header from Giorgos Masouras. Masouras doubled the advantage in first-half stoppage time, finishing from close range after Ioannidis intercepted a poor backpass from the Dutch defense.
The Netherlands responded with vigor in the second half. Virgil van Dijk narrowed the deficit in the 59th minute, scoring with a header following a corner from Joey Veerman. Despite a crucial save by Greece’s goalkeeper Konstantis Tzolakis later in the match, the Netherlands managed to secure an equalizer in the 89th minute as Tijjani Reijnders scored from close range.
With this result, Greece now has seven points, maintaining a two-point lead over the Netherlands. Greece will host Germany in their next fixture on Sunday.
