PostNL announced that the price of a standard postage stamp will rise to €1.40 next year, up from €1.31. The company said the increase is necessary due to declining mail volumes and rising operational costs.
According to PostNL’s mail division director Maurice Unck, the company is now spending more on mail delivery than it earns. “Two decades ago, each address received about three letters per day; today, that number has dropped to three per week,” he said, noting that the decline has made the postal service less profitable.
Unck acknowledged that the price hike is “unwelcome but necessary,” citing higher expenses for logistics, infrastructure, and labor that are now distributed over fewer deliveries. He added that the company continues to meet its delivery obligations with the same commitment, even as demand falls.
Starting in 2027, the Dutch government will allow letters and cards up to three days for delivery, easing current postal service requirements. PostNL said the change will help balance service quality with economic realities as it adapts to a more digital era.
