Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans said he has “major questions” about the reported US peace plan for Ukraine, which leaked this week but has not been officially released. While he did not detail his specific objections, Brekelmans stressed that the Netherlands firmly supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
According to media reports, the 28-point proposal would require Ukraine to give up its claims to Russian-occupied territories—including parts of Donbas and Crimea—and to abandon its bid for NATO membership, a key element of Ukraine’s long-term security strategy. The plan was reportedly developed by the US and Russia without involvement from Kyiv or the EU.
Brekelmans said the Dutch position remains unchanged: only Ukraine can decide whether to make territorial concessions. European and Ukrainian officials have already rejected the proposal, warning that rewarding Russian aggression would embolden Vladimir Putin and increase risks for NATO countries.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has also warned that any ceasefire proposal lacking support from both Ukraine and European governments is destined to fail, noting that Europe is currently Ukraine’s largest source of military and financial assistance.
