If you enjoy thrillers that explore the dark, obsessive corners of the human psyche, two films on Netflix and Prime Video are essential viewing. These movies skip supernatural monsters in favor of the monsters driven by envy and desire.
On Prime Video, Saltburn is a unique and unsettling psychological drama. It stars Barry Keoghan as an Oxford student who becomes infatuated with his wealthy, charismatic classmate. An invitation to the friend’s sprawling family estate for the summer unleashes a twisted, sensual, and suspenseful tale of social climbing and dark manipulation.
On Netflix, The Occupant tackles obsession from the angle of lost status. This Spanish thriller follows a once-successful executive (Javier Gutiérrez) who cannot cope with his fall into poverty. After discovering he still has the keys to his old luxury apartment, he begins to dangerously stalk the new family living there.
While these two films will chill you to the bone, the streaming services have more to offer. For apocalyptic terror, watch Sandra Bullock in Bird Box (Netflix). For claustrophobic sci-fi, see 10 Cloverfield Lane (Prime Video).
And for more action-oriented suspense, check out Tom Hardy’s crime saga Havoc (Netflix), the nuclear-themed Interceptor (Netflix), or the A-list spy drama Black Bag (Prime Video) starring Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett.
