US President Donald Trump is striking a bullish tone on his upcoming talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, even as a new trade war eruption threatens global markets. “I think it’s going to work out very well,” Trump said from Tokyo.
The “big meeting” is set for Thursday in South Korea, on the sidelines of the APEC summit. Trump’s optimism comes despite a serious escalation in economic hostilities between the two superpowers.
The conflict flared anew after China imposed tight export controls on rare earth minerals. The US retaliated with a significant threat: 100% tariffs on Chinese goods, slated to begin on November 1.
This tit-for-tat has broken a recent period of relative calm. The US also pressed through with new port fees on Chinese ships, which in turn sparked a wave of mutual countermeasures from Beijing.
“We are gonna be (having) a fantastic meeting,” Trump insisted, adding it would be “great for everybody.” He also noted that both he and President Xi have “a lot to talk about.”
This meeting is the diplomatic centerpiece of Trump’s broader Asia trip. During his time in the region, he has focused heavily on trade, met with Japan’s new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, and spoken to US troops, aiming to highlight America’s economic influence.
