Norway has imposed partial airspace restrictions over Oslo and the Romerike region as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived for crucial peace talks aimed at finding a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict with Russia. The discussions, set to run through Wednesday, involve high-profile figures including Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and US special envoy Steve Witkoff, with Jared Kushner participating remotely.
Støre emphasized the importance of steering diplomatic efforts toward a constructive path. Norway and Finland have been vocal supporters of Ukraine, providing financial aid, military cooperation, and engaging in broader European security initiatives since the outbreak of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
The backdrop of these talks includes continued Russian military aggression against Ukrainian cities and vital infrastructure. In response, Ukraine has been vocal in its calls for increased Western air defense support and sustained international pressure on Moscow to cease hostilities.
In a parallel discussion, Zelensky also engaged with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, signaling Kyiv’s hopes for ongoing American support, particularly concerning warnings about potential Russian attacks.
Norwegian political leaders have stressed the significance of these meetings in shaping diplomatic strategies and ensuring Ukraine’s interests remain at the forefront of efforts to end the war.
