Elon Musk has unveiled a prototype of the Tesla Roadster 2, showcasing its integration of SpaceX-developed rocket thruster technology. Demonstrated remotely in Texas, the electric sports car impressed observers by ascending a curved ramp and using thrusters to execute aerial maneuvers before landing safely. This technology, Musk suggested, could transform the vehicle into a potential flying car.
During the demonstration, Musk highlighted the vehicle’s capability to perform complex movements such as rolls, made possible by its rear-mounted thrusters and altitude controls. However, he acknowledged that the car’s flying features might not comply with legal standards in all regions. The Roadster 2 is anticipated to enter production in 2028, with its price projected to surpass $200,000.
Tesla has outlined various versions of the Roadster 2, including a high-performance model and a specialized variant equipped with a thrust system. Additionally, a single-seat rocket version incorporating a full flight system is planned to be offered by invitation only. Despite the innovative advancements, Tesla cautions that the flying capabilities are not designed for use on public roads.
The demonstration underscores Musk’s ambition to merge electric vehicle technology with rocket propulsion, although significant hurdles remain in terms of practical application, safety requirements, and regulatory approval. The showcase of the Tesla Roadster 2 highlights ongoing efforts to push the boundaries of automotive and aerospace innovation.
