Eight men deported from the US to South Sudan are now in government custody in Juba, but US officials admit they have no information about their current situation. The men, from countries including Cuba and Vietnam, were sent to South Sudan under a policy allowing deportation to third countries.
Tom Homan, the US border czar, stated,They’re free as far as we’re concerned, signaling a lack of US oversight once migrants are removed. Only one of the eight reportedly has any connection to South Sudan.
Legal battles initially delayed their deportation, with the group held in Djibouti until Supreme Court rulings allowed their transfer. South Sudanese authorities have said the men are being screened and their wellbeing is being monitored.
The episode has sparked debate about the morality and effectiveness of deporting individuals to countries with which they have no ties, especially those emerging from conflict.
