Drivers in and around Amsterdam are being strongly advised to avoid travel this weekend, as major roadworks are set to cause significant traffic disruption across key routes. The start of the summer holiday period in the northern region is expected to further intensify congestion.
Starting Friday evening, several critical infrastructure projects will begin simultaneously, affecting main arteries in and out of the city. These include new maintenance work on the A4, a complete shutdown of the second Coentunnel, and ongoing closures along the A10 ring road.
The A4 will operate with reduced, narrower lanes between junction De Hoek and junction Burgerveen until August 20, as resurfacing and structural upgrades are carried out. Meanwhile, the second Coentunnel will be closed until September 15 for essential upgrades to its fire safety, lighting, and monitoring systems. This closure will affect traffic heading toward Amsterdam-Noord and Zaanstad.
Commuters are urged to work from home where possible or opt for public transportation. With holiday departures beginning and major weekend events like Bospop and the North Sea Jazz Festival scheduled, authorities are expecting major delays, particularly from Friday afternoon onward.
